To ensure all Queenslanders of all ages affected by hearing loss, considering hearing implants, or currently using hearing technology, along with their families, are supported and informed.
To work collaboratively with hearing professionals and the industry to promote and provide awareness, rehabilitation support, and opportunities for social engagement in a community encompassing all people with hearing loss, current hearing implant users, those considering hearing implants, and their friends and families.
At CICADA Queensland, we proudly welcome people with all types of hearing loss or Deafness. Our recently updated mission and vision reflect a commitment to embracing all hearing implant solutions, not limited to cochlear implants alone. For those of us with a Hearing Implant, we can draw on our first-hand knowledge and experience with this remarkable technology to foster a strong, supportive community for all our members.
We focus on three key principles:
SHARE - Your journey, your story, your ideas—all are unique and invaluable.
LISTEN - To what matters most to you, so we can support you in reaching your personal hearing goals.
CONNECT - With the people and resources that empower you to advance in your hearing journey.
CICADA Queensland is a fully independent, not-for-profit support organisation run by dedicated volunteers. Our committee is working hard to implement exciting new changes that will carry CICADA QLD INC into the future, while honouring the original vision of our founding members. As an organisation, we seek to embrace and support individuals from all walks of life throughout their hearing loss journey.
This includes those just beginning to consider Hearing Implants, as well as those who are already established implant users. Whether you identify as Deaf or Hard of Hearing, use Auslan or spoken language as your primary means of communication, or simply need support for yourself, family, or friends, CICADA Queensland is here to help you navigate this journey.

Recently, an episode of Insight on SBS portrayed a “divide” between the Deaf Community and the Cochlear Implant community. However, after attending a workshop hosted by Deaf Services Australia, I walked away convinced that this gap is closing. Their support for the broader hearing loss community was evident, and I am proud to say they have mine as well.
CICADA Queensland was originally founded as a Cochlear Implant support group, but as new technology emerges, so does our mission. Today, I see us as a Community of hearing Implant users working together to support one another on our unique hearing journeys. Regardless of what hearing implant you use, we welcome you. We are committed to supporting Auslan and stand united with all individuals in the Deaf and hearing loss communities.
Beyond this, CICADA Queensland is leading the way in Australia with our innovative use of live AI-driven captioning. Across Queensland, we are enhancing accessibility and creating more inclusive spaces for those with hearing loss by providing this advanced support at our events. We are proud to be setting a new standard in accessible communication.
Don’t let the media convince you otherwise. CICADA Queensland is a support group that embraces everyone with hearing loss. We welcome those who are on a journey with a hearing implant, as well as those who are bilingual and learning Auslan. As our community grows, so does our strength.
“United we stand, divided we fall.” Let’s stand united, embracing and encouraging the use of Auslan and all forms of support that empower us. I choose to use my gift of hearing through the incredible medical science of a hearing implant to listen, because if we listen to each other, we can truly support each other.
If such a divide exists, I ask each of you to help bridge that gap. Together, we are the answer.
Sincerely,
John Ross
